Origin / Growing regions

The cultivated varieties with large fruits we know today have evolved from the garden strawberry, which originated in the 18th century after American varieties were introduced in Europe. More than 1,000 different types are known to exist today. Strawberries are cultivated the world over. The United States is the world’s largest producer.


Strawberries belong to the Rosaceae family of flowering plants. They are not classified botanically as berries, but rather as aggregate accessory fruits, which means that their receptacles form what appear to be fruits, on the surface of which the actual fruits grow as small, yellow “nuts” or seeds.


Strawberries appear in different shapes and sizes, depending on the type. Their colour usually ranges from orange to dark crimson. For our Pago Strawberry we use only a very special variety with dark-red berries.



A strawberry contains over 300 different aromatic substances. The fruits must be harvested at full ripeness, as they do not continue to ripen after picking. Strawberries are often eaten in their natural state but are also popular ingredients in cakes and pies and especially in jams and jellies. They are also used in yogurt, junket and ice-cream.

Distinctive features

Strawberries contain 90 per cent water and are especially low in calories. They are a rich source of vitamins (including vitamin C) as well as iron and folic acid.
