RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE VALUE CHAIN
Production and logistics

Our Goals

A commitment to modern environmental protection has been an integral component of our corporate philosophy for many years. Eckes-Granini plants have been certified regularly in accordance with the rigorous standards of the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) since 1996. We are committed to achieving the following environmental goals by the year 2020:

  • All plants owned and operated by the Eckes-Granini Group will be certified in accordance with EMAS standards.
  • Energy and water consumption as well as waste production will be reduced by 10%.
  • More renewable energy will be used (+30% at Group level)
  • The top 20 logistics partners in each country will have established active sustainability programmes and will be audited regularly by an independent institute.

What we've achieved already

Eckes-Granini is one of the few business enterprises in the food and beverage industry that are audited in accordance with the rigorous standards of the Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) – and has been for many years. Within the framework of the revalidation process, EMAS auditors have consistently confirmed that the leading supplier of fruit beverages meets the highest environmental-management standards at nearly all of its production sites. The only exception is the plant in Ringe (Denmark) added to the fold through the acquisition of Rynkeby Foods A/S, which will be audited in 2019.

Today, more than 60% of the electricity consumed by the Group comes from renewable energy sources, and that figure rises to 100% in Germany, Finland, Hungary and Lithuania. CO2 emissions have also been reduced by about 20% over the past five years.

Investments in new, modern packaging systems also contribute to the achievement of our sustainability goals and help reduce consumption even further.

Successes have also been achieved in efforts to reduce CO2 emissions in logistics. Diesel consumption by the lorry fleet has been reduced by 20% as a result of driver training programmes and other measures over the past five years. Eckes-Granini’s conscientious resource management and environmental awareness have been honoured with the Lean & Green 1st Star-Award in Germany. This award recognizes the successful implementation of the action plan for the reduction of CO2 emissions developed by TÜV NORD CERT.

As a member of the Zentrum für Nachhaltige Unternehmensführung (Centre of Sustainable Corporate Management, ZNU), our German subsidiary joined the "ZNU goes Zero" initiative in 2019. The goal of the initiative is to achieve climate neutrality by the year 2022. The medium-term goal is to establish climate-neutral operations at all three German locations beginning in 2020.

What we're working on

  • The plant in Ringe, Denmark, will also be certified by EMAS – the world’s most demanding sustainable environmental management system – in 2019.
  • Further reductions in energy and water consumption as well as waste production
  • Progressively increasing use of renewable energy
  • All certificates for our international facilities will be renewed continually.
