Lemon

Origin / growing areas

According to reliable historical evidence, lemons had already been discovered in China by the year 1,000 BC. Because they require a consistently warm, moist climate, lemons are cultivated primarily in the southern regions of the world. Mexico is the world’s leading lemon-producing country. Spain and Italy top the list in Europe.

Distinctive features

Lemons are especially rich in vitamin C. 100 grams satisfy 71 percent of the recommended minimum daily requirement. Lemon juice is often used as an ingredient in hot beverages, since vitamin C is known to have a beneficial impact on the immune system.

Fruit

The roughly fist-sized, oval fruits have a tough, yellow skin and contain multiple sections of very juicy flesh. Cut horizontally, the structure of the inside of a lemon calls to mind the spokes of a wheel.

Flavour

Lemons have a primarily sour taste, as everyone knows. That is attributable to the high fruit-acid content, which can amount to as much as eight percent. Yet they are also pleasantly refreshing thanks to their very delicate aroma. That is why lemon juice is often used by juice producers for fruit juices, fruit beverages and fruit-based soft drinks.

Other fruits

… that the German phrase “sauer macht lustig” (sour makes you happy) is not really true? The phrase is actually based on a mistranslation of the old German word “gelustig”, which meant hungry. Sour foods enhance the appetite by stimulating the saliva production and digestion.
